The capital and largest city is <a title=\"Barcelona\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barcelona\">Barcelona<\/a>, the second-most populated <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Municipalities in Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Municipalities_in_Spain\">municipality<\/a> in Spain and the core of the seventh-most populous urban area in the <a title=\"European Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Union\">European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Catalonia comprises most of the territory of the former <a title=\"Principality of Catalonia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Principality_of_Catalonia\">Principality of Catalonia<\/a> (with the remainder <a title=\"Roussillon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roussillon\">Roussillon<\/a> now part of France&#8217;s <a title=\"Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyr%C3%A9n%C3%A9es-Orientales\">Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es-Orientales<\/a>). It is bordered by <a title=\"France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/France\">France<\/a> and <a title=\"Andorra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andorra\">Andorra<\/a> to the north, the <a title=\"Mediterranean Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mediterranean_Sea\">Mediterranean Sea<\/a> to the east, and the Spanish autonomous communities of <a title=\"Aragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aragon\">Aragon<\/a> to the west and <a title=\"Valencian Community\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valencian_Community\">Valencia<\/a> to the south. The official languages are <a title=\"Catalan language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_language\">Catalan<\/a>, <a title=\"Spanish language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_language\">Spanish<\/a>, and the <a title=\"Aranese dialect\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aranese_dialect\">Aranese dialect<\/a> of <a title=\"Occitan language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Occitan_language\">Occitan<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-estatut_langs_13-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalonia#cite_note-estatut_langs-13\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In the late 8th century, the counties of the <a title=\"Septimania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Septimania\">March of Gothia<\/a> and the <a title=\"Marca Hispanica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marca_Hispanica\">Hispanic March<\/a> were established by the <a title=\"Carolingian Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carolingian_Empire\">Frankish kingdom<\/a> as feudatory vassals across and near the eastern <a title=\"Pyrenees\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyrenees\">Pyrenees<\/a> as a defensive barrier against Muslim invasions. The eastern counties of these marches were united under the rule of the Frankish vassal the <a title=\"County of Barcelona\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_of_Barcelona\">Count of Barcelona<\/a>, and were later called Catalonia. In 1137, Catalonia and the <a title=\"Kingdom of Aragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_of_Aragon\">Kingdom of Aragon<\/a> were united by marriage under the <a title=\"Crown of Aragon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_of_Aragon\">Crown of Aragon<\/a>, and the Principality of Catalonia became the base for the Crown of Aragon&#8217;s naval power and expansionism in the Mediterranean. In the later Middle Ages <a title=\"Catalan literature\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_literature\">Catalan literature<\/a> flourished. Between 1469 and 1516, the King of Aragon and the Queen of <a title=\"Crown of Castile\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_of_Castile\">Castile<\/a> married and ruled their kingdoms together, retaining all their distinct institutions, <a title=\"Catalan Courts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_Courts\">Courts<\/a> (<a title=\"Parliament\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parliament\">parliament<\/a>), and <a title=\"Catalan constitutions\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_constitutions\">constitutions<\/a>. During the Franco-Spanish War (1635\u20131659), <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Catalan Revolt\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_Revolt\">Catalonia revolted<\/a> (1640\u20131652) against a large and burdensome presence of the Royal army in its territory, becoming a <a title=\"Catalan Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catalan_Republic\">republic<\/a> under French protection. Within a brief period France took full control of Catalonia, at a high economic cost for Catalonia, until it was largely reconquered by the Spanish army. Under the terms of the <a title=\"Treaty of the Pyrenees\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treaty_of_the_Pyrenees\">Treaty of the Pyrenees<\/a> in 1659, which ended the wider Franco-Spanish War, the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Spanish Crown\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Crown\">Spanish Crown<\/a> ceded the northern parts of Catalonia, mostly incorporated in the county of <a title=\"Roussillon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roussillon\">Roussillon<\/a>, to France. During the <a title=\"War of the Spanish Succession\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_of_the_Spanish_Succession\">War of the Spanish Succession<\/a> (1701\u20131714), the Crown of Aragon sided against the <a title=\"House of Bourbon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/House_of_Bourbon\">Bourbon<\/a> <a title=\"Philip V of Spain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philip_V_of_Spain\">Philip V of Spain<\/a>, whose subsequent victory led to the <a title=\"Nueva Planta decrees\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nueva_Planta_decrees\">abolition<\/a> of non-Castilian institutions in all of Spain and the replacement of Latin and other languages (such as Catalan) with Spanish in legal documents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya, Occitan: Catalonha, Spanish: Catalu\u00f1a)[a][b] is an autonomous community of Spain, located on the northeastern extremity of the Iberian Peninsula.
